A Word a Day: A Great Idea

word_dayThere is a saying which goes like this “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I really like that slogan. It encourages us to eat well and reminds us that a visit to the doctor may not always be a pleasant experience. So, it is worth the effort to eat well and watch our diet closely. In a similar way, we should “nourish” our mind with at least a daily word, don’t you think? In fact, this idea is so ideological, that most people don’t even stop to listen to such a suggestion. But, the power of this great idea is just that: great.

Over a year’s time, you will learn a total of 365 new words, and over ten years you will have learned 3650 words. There are people who don’t even know that many words, even after completing high school or college. So, the suggestion of committing yourself to a daily program (e.g. mental diet) of one words, daily, is a great idea, to say the least.

Where can you find a daily word to learn? My first recommendation is the open-source and totally free website called “Wiktionary”. This website is very similar to Wikipedia, and its goal is very similar – to provide free reference information for people across the globe via the Internet. Wiktionary is maintained by donations, just like Wikipedia, and the number of words available keeps on growing. On the home page, you will see all the languages that are featured. As you enter the language link (as highlighted in this blog post graphic image), you will see that a daily word is featured. Test yourself. Can you create a meaningful sentence with the daily word? If you avail yourself to this small task, daily, I guarantee you will grow into a new level of vocabulary mastery, at the least. If you are learning a foreign language, you will grow similarly with that language.

Cheers,

Keith

Thanks for the great resource! SpanishDict has something similar, in Spanish! You can get their word-of-the-day widget or on twitter by following @spanishdict. They’ve got great Spanish translation, too! Good luck.

@Nesrine – hope you enjoy Wiktionary as much as I have. They have not only English, but also Spanish and French dictionaries too. Not sure if they have Arabic, but check to see. Great resource for a language professional like you :) Thanks for stopping by and thanks for your blog support.
