In the same way a hiker overlooks a lake and distant hills and mountains in the countryside, and gets filled with a great sense of inspiration, a writer can look to the words of the acclaimed author and writer Og Mandino for inspiration. Og has been called “the bestselling author of our times” and “one with whom you can change your life with the precious wisdom of ancient scrolls that have been handed down for thousands of years”. Og Mandino has written many, many books to lift the spirit of men and women in business, and this applies to writers as well!

In his book The Greatest Salesman in the World, Og takes us on a journey and in this journey he makes observations about life and its path and how good salesmanship is the result of positive thinking. He also talks about his philosophy of love and how this inner strength can be translated into successful business practices, even writing. So, fellow writers, as you grab your pen and paper every day to forge ahead in your career, heed the words of this modern sage, who will surely inspire you to produce some of your best works yet:

With love I will tear down the walls of suspicion and hate which men have built around their hearts and in its place I will build bridges so that my love may enter their souls. I will love the ambitious for they can inspire me. I will love the failures of men for they will teach me things. I will love kings because they are human too. I will love the meek because they are divine.

I will love the rich because they are lonely. I will love the poor because there are so many of them. I will love the young for they have great faith and optimism. I will love the old because of the wisdom they have to share. I will love the beautiful because the sadness in their eyes. I will love the ugly because they have peaceful souls. I affirm that I will greet this day with love in my heart.

But how will I react to the reactions of men? The answer: with love. For just as love is a weapon to open the hearts of men, love is also a shield to repulse the arrows of hatred and the spears of anger. Adversity and discouragement will beat against my new shield and become as the softest of rains. My shield will protect me in the marketplace and sustain me when I am alone. It will uplift me in moments of dispair and will calm me in moments of exultation.

And mostly, I will love myself. For when I do, I will zealously inspect all things which enter my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. Never will I overindulge the requests of flesh, rather, I will cherish my body with cleanliness and moderation. Never will I allow my mind to be attracted to dispair. Rather, I will uplift it with the knowledge and wisdom of the ages.

Never will I allow my soul to become complacent and satisfied. Rather, I will fill it with meditation and prayer. With love, I will increase my sales and productive levels one hundred-fold. If I have no other qualities, I can succeed with love alone. Without it, I will fail though I possess all the knowledge and skills of the world.

I will greet this day with love, and I will succeed.
