Penmanship

In today’s highly technical world of information technology where everyone is communicating with text messages, e-mails and voice mails, you may wonder if people still remember how to write with a basic pen and a pad of paper. Well, I myself wondered that very thought back several years ago when I was an employee at the Broward County Governmental Offices in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

It turns out that the Broward County Continuing Education “penmanship” class was always full! I had to place myself on the waiting list because people were in dire need of improving their physical writing skills and penmanship skills. After a few weeks, I was finally admitted to the class and really enjoyed it. Indeed, the computer revolution has taken its toll on not only our minds, but also our writing skills.

Writing with a pen or pencil on paper is still a wonderful experience. In fact, you can create diagrams and relate your thoughts and ideas with a very spontaneous dynamic that you cannot necessarily do on a computer keyboard. Today, our minds work really fast and process alot of information, so it is easy to lose a thought. However, with a pen and paper, you can most surely get the entire thought on paper because you don’t really need to write everything down. You can design your thoughts as you need, and then fill in the details later. Still, you need to have good enough penmanship skills to be able to read later on what you wrote earlier!

So, today’s blog is simply a reminder for you to do a reality check on your penmanship and writing skills. Do others complain that they cannot read what you have written? If that is the case, or if you YOURSELF cannot read what you have written, you need to find a local community college writing or penmanship class that meets for a few weeks and work on these skills. If you are student in junior high school, high school or college, then I would recommend you act even faster, since your studies are directly affected by your writing and penmanship skills :)

Remember: practice makes perfect!
