Snag It Screen Capture Software
Written by Keith Johnson - Posted on May 16th, 2009
When it comes to Screen Capture software, there is none equal to “Snag-It” by Tech-Smith. Currently at Version Nine (9), Snag-It offers the user many different ways to capture the visual computing experience into an image that can be then used for publications, blogging, or even video and training purposes. The scope of Snag-It is always growing and I remember when this software only offered a few screen capture options, several years ago. However, about a month ago, one of the Snag-It people sent me a complimentary copy of the program so that I could evaluate it for the purpose of this blog post. I still have alot of ground to cover, but in short, Snag-It is awesome software that has a capture option that will best serve your interests, that is, recording a specific screen shot, for whatever purpose you need.
Here are the ten (10) types of screen-capture that Snag-It offers in its current version (9th).
One: Regional
Two: Window
Three: Full Screen
Four: Scrolling Window
Five: Menu With Time Delay
Six: Text From Window
Seven: Record Screen Video
Eight: Images From Web Page
Nine: Web Page (With Links)
Ten: Objects (On Screen)
This is pretty good in terms of diverse types of screen-captures. For a long time, I have used Paint Shop Pro to capture images for my Technical Writing activities, but now as you can see, Snag-It is far superior. All of these types of captures will help tech writers like myself, not to mention other IT professionals who need to capture something on the screen for their documents.
Additionally, Snag-It helps you to fulfill other tasks that may be part of your screen-capture mission. First, you can Convert Images (see image above) from one format to another format. Secondly, you can Turn on OneClick, which lets you keep a mini-menu about Snag-It on your screen (usually in the upper left hand corner, but this can be modified). Third, you can set-up a printer to work with screen captures you have gathered with Snag-It. Fourth, the program lets you Organize Profiles, and finally, the program lets you manage accessories (e.g. video camera, other software programs) that you might need to use either to propose an image to Snag-It or to use an image as part of some other project.
All in all, Snag-It is a tremendous program for anyone who needs to effectively capture screens and their content. The quality of the image gathered is great and you can then use these images as part of documentation, training, requirements or any other type of document are preparing, complimenting any and all text that you are composing.

Keith
