As a Technical Writer in the field of software development, I can tell you - firsthand - that training is the key to keeping a company in a competitive position and in a position to transition into new technologies and ways of thinking. There are many new software programs on the market to help fulfill this transition however many of these programs lack the human element - yes - the Technical Writer!
Great Training in new programs is the direct result of working with Technical Writers who can create handy and resourceful user manuals and training manuals. Many times, trainers are good at explaining things verbally, but they do not enjoy writing out detailed explanations of functionalities, however, this is the special skill of the Technical Writer. He or She can successfully analyze a software program, create a manual that explains its functionalities, and then literally hand off this manual to the training department of his or her company. From there, the trainer can develop presentations and more based upon such foundation documentation.
So, in the world of computer technology, it is quality software documentation that serves as a basis for great training presentations about both the company’s products as well as tools used by the company to create and support its products. Technical Writers many times are seen as “backup” or “second string” professionals, however, their role is always one of a “first string nature”, because nobody really likes to write detailed documentation that gets into the “granular” details of an application or system. So, if your company has a good Technical Writer, be glad!
Finally, because quality software documentation serves as the basis for great training presentations, this also helps sales because the complete and detailed product functionality is there in the documentation. Marketing and Sales need not reinvent the wheel. The Technical Writers have come through and established the true written summary about a product and what it can do and how it is going to help the customer or client.
