Ten Relaxation Techniques for Writers
Written by Keith Johnson - Posted on August 12th, 2008
Hello everyone – today’s post is a simple one
Basically, from time to time, all writers experience moments where they feel depleted and tired – so today’s post is to address this concern. Nobody is made of steel. We are all human beings and so we must retreat from writing, even if it is for 24 hours, and re-energize ourselves with proven techniques. The following suggestions are things that I myself use to re-energize and re-capture the essence of my creative potential after practicing some of these:
1. Go for a walk – there is nothing more energizing that a good walk.
2. Go for a swim – for those of you who have access to the beach, a lake, a river, or a pool, this is always great. Water is truly energizing and helps you to circulate blood to all parts of your body, especially your brain and your arms!
3. Call your friends – we live in a world with e-connections – e-mail, texting, etc. However, there is nothing more rewarding that chatting over the phone with a good friend. See how your best friends are and remind them that you are not yet one of the lost.
4. Go see a movie – a good movie is always fun and exciting, and can even offer you a chance to reflect in the course of the movie and emerge with new writing content and ideas. Viva los movies!
5. Take a drive in your car – my grandfather used to take my grandma, every Sunday, for a drive out of Hartford, Connecticut, where they lived, into Massachusetts or down toward the shore (the Connecticut shore on Long Island sound). A change of scenery is always nice.
6. Treat yourself to a massage – if you have any kind of bodily pain or discomfort – a massage, when properly done – can help relax you immensely. When I suffered from some back pain due to a back disk I have, a Chinese Acupuncturist gave me a light back massage and boy did that feel great.
7. Treat yourself to a great meal – if there is a meal you have been wanting to prepare for a long time but could never find the time – do it now! Once again, digressions from the usual routine usually stimulate us back into new patterns of creativity.
8. Read a good book – like food, reading is nourishing the mind. Go get the book you have been wanting to read and enjoy your book. This will become a truly sacred time and one of great relaxation.
9. Clean your place – sometimes it is good to do a “spring cleaning” even if it is not springtime. Clean your closets, kitchen, workspace, etc. and you will find yourself with new energy for writing.
10. Comedy – go see either some stand-up comedy or go to your local video-sales store and buy a truly funny video. I personally love Looney Tunes (from the 80s) and you will get a great laugh and release alot of tension. This is a surefire way to get back into the writing routine again
