Virtual Enlightenment
Written by Keith Johnson - Posted on July 6th, 2009
I guess you could say the reason why I enjoy blogging is that it keeps me in touch with other bloggers and others who are proactively involved with the Internet in different ways. I have experienced many different angles of the web through this simple blog.
I have had people praise me, encourage me, and at the same time criticize me and call me different names. But do you know something, that is alright. Yup. Why? Because the Internet is living history and as we write our blog posts (bloggers) we are adding to the “compendium” of human knowledge that is stored in thousands, or perhaps now millions of servers across the globe. Did any of you see the movie “Time Machine” where the mathematician seeking to save the life of his girlfriend finally meets a computer that calls itself the “sum total of human intelligence”. So, effectively, that character in Time Machine was “virtually enlightened.”
I am especially amazed at You Tube. It just keeps getting better. I have been able to find all kinds of fascinating video clips at You Tube that cannot be found anywhere else. It is my sincere hope that, collectively, we will all see the Internet one day as I see You Tube now – a compendium of information that cannot be had anywhere else. In other words, a true treasure.
While humanity is buzzing along nicely toward virtual enlightenment collectively, of course there are also a few dark souls out there who do not wish the best for the rest of us. They try to hack our sites and mess things up. Yeah, they think they are cool, but if they only knew the pain they inflict. It takes courage to embrace light over darkness and really dedicate your time and energy to the betterment of humanity, whatever your area of knowledge or expertise may be.
When we all make the decision to use the Internet and contribute to the Internet for the betterment of humanity, then we will indeed change the world for the better. Over the course of my life, I have gradually shifted from a right-wing capitalist to a mid-range democrat embracing principles that are more geared toward collective social welfare. Anybody can get sick and anybody can suffer. Not only that, but we need to have an infrastructure there so that the very best of us can continue, because in many ways we are not expendable like many capitalists say. Each one of us is unique and has something of great value to contribute, I really believe that.
I recently received a comment from my recent post about Microsoft Windows 7 where this one visitor called me a shill, accusing me of appearing like some kind of enthusiastic consumer whereas perhaps I was actually getting paid my Microsoft to promote Windows 7 on my blog. That is false. I am only that, an enthusiast. I have no reseller rights to Microsoft products in any way. As a Technical Writer, I sincerely want to enhance the overall software experience of my readers. Why? Because that is the kind of person I am. It is a great thing to help others and help them to their virtual enlightenment, if you will.
The world economies are shifting in ways that are unprecedented, historically. Yet, unlike before, we have an ace, and that is the Internet. If used correctly and respected, technology will serve to move humanity to a greater level of dignity, wellness, education, and perhaps even enlightenment. So, if a poor child in Africa receives a laptop computer and can get access to the Internet, he or she can literally self-educate and then turn around to become another contributor to the Web and some site somewhere. Now, that is success, in a really great way.
All The Best,
Keith
