Word 2007 Tip #3: File Menu’s New Design

The File Menu in MS-Word 2007 has undergone a MAJOR overhaul. What you must do is click on the new MS-Office Icon in the upper-left hand corner of the program, and then you will see the newly designed File Menu. The top four icons are pretty similar to the previous version of Word, however, the bottom four are definitely new. Here are the File Menu options all spelled out for you:
1. New: By clicking on this icon, you can create a brand new document.
2. Open: By clicking on this icon, you can open a previously created document. It does not matter whether the file was created in Word 2007 or a previous version, or even in a potentially compatible word processing package. You must first use this button to open the file before you can do anything else.
3. Save: My son is in Seventh Grade, and I tell him to save his work, which he forgets! Please, folks, save your work and spare yourself the agony of losing precious work that you might not be able to re-create.
4. Save As: Click on this button when you wish to rename the document after it has already been saved and you want to copy the file into another unique document. Also, you, of course, have all of MS-Word’s traditional options at your disposal here, like saving the file in the format of a previous version of MS-Word.
5. Print: After you install MS-Word 2007, go to the Microsoft website and search for the page where there is a plug-in for PDFs. Perhaps you don’t actually want to print out the page, but wish to “print to PDF”. As you select print to PDF, MS-Word will generate a PDF copy of this file that is protected in the PDF format, so others may read but not change the content.
6. Prepare: This option lets you attribute Properties to the document, like the author’s name and other items. Here you may also encrypt the file for protection as well.
7. Send: Click on this option if you wish to send the document via e-mail to someone. I personally recommend that you first save the file, especially in PDF format, and then sent it as an attachment with your e-mail. Sending unprotected documents or non-encrypted documents should be done only to truly confidential individuals.
8. Publish: Are you creating a page for your website? If so, click on this option.
9. Close: When you need to navigate out of this menu, click on the “Close” icon.
